The Scarcer 1858 Penny Plates - What Should I Pay?

To take the quick option and simply purchase the complete collection of all the issued plate numbers between plate 71 and 225 from a dealer will currently cost you in the region of £200-£250 for sound/good used examples, £400-500 for fine used and more - perhaps double - for very fine used stamps. Get ready to pay well in to four figures for the same collection of mint stamps. However, the fun of collecting for many of us who have to watch the pennies is it to achieve the same goal over time by buying, sorting, finding and trading at fairs, auctions and online.

A simple search for SG 43 at online auction finds numerous offers of singles and multiples to browse through, sort and plate. Eventually however you try to build your collection you are likely to find a few key plates that are very difficult to find and more cleverley targeted searching online can save time and money. The most obvious examples among all the penny plates are the very highest plate numbers which were produced in far smaller numbers with plate 225 being the most elusive.

So what are the most difficult plates collectors should try to snap up when they appear online? Here's a simple checklist of the scarcest six plates in what we think is their order of difficulty. Alongside we've given typical current dealer guide prices (which can vary greatly according to condition of stamps). By clicking the plate number links in this list a new window will open revealing any current online offers for that plate number that may offer the chance of a big discount from typical retail prices. At the time of writing a glance through many of the recently completed online listings showed it's not unusual for buyers to save 50% or more compared to dealer list prices.

As always with GB Stamps, when buying pay careful attention to the condition and centering of stamps. Even minor imperfections can mean a huge difference in true value. Always consider paying for your online stamp purchases using Paypal where you should have the right to return any unsatisfactory stamp to the vendor and claim a refund if it is found to be "not as described" in the listing or obvious faults were not apparent in the picture or description.
