BFPO 45 Berlin RAF Gatow Covers Harder To Find

The covers produced by Gatow's Stamp Club are worth looking out for now as the BFPO 45 postmarks of Berlin are among a very few military postmarks used overseas that actually named the geographic location of their use. Since the closure of RAF Gatow and the various British Army barracks in the city, these postmarks are becoming ever more difficult for collectors to find.

The RAF Gatow stamp club operated from a small room close to the main guardroom. They produced covers as a fund raiser - usually for service charities - which often commemorated various anniversaries and events to do with Berlin (e.g. the Berlin Airlift). On occassions the stamp club arranged for the only fixed wing aircraft housed at RAF Gatow (a two seater Chipmunk trainer) or the helicopters of the Army Air Corps to fly covers and justify adding cahets to that effect.
