"Rainbow Trials" by David Rowse - Philatelic Book Review

ISBN 0-907630-16-2

In this book, David Rowse explains why the Penny Black postage stamp really was an extraordinary creation. Not only was it the first postage stamp, the first stamp to portray an effigy of the reigning Sovereign it also - save for for two minor instances which were quickly detected and resolved, was never forged. This book tells the full story of how the colour changed and turned the Penny Black in to the Penny Red.

The book is hardbound, illustrated in colour and includes a lot of previously unseen material, much of which was scanned directly from the original items to ensure the best colour reproduction possible. In all there are 180 illustrations, 146 of which are "Rainbow Trials" items including 77 featured in the Royal collection.

The book weighs in at a hefty £75 at the GB Philatelic Society website (GBPS members £67.50) but at the time of writing a couple of used books are available on Amazon at an eyecatching £19.50.
